Does auto insurance cover non-accident repairs?

The only type of non-accident repair covered by auto insurance is that covered by comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive coverage is generally a component of a full coverage policy. It covers any incident that is not considered a collision. Repairs covered under comprehensive non-accident insurance include:

  • Natural disasters
  • Broken windshield
  • Theft of vehicle
  • Theft of vehicle parts
  • Fallen objects
  • Fire
  • Riots/vandalism
  • Animals

Your coverage will depend on your policy.

What does car insurance not cover?

Unfortunately, auto insurance is limited to what is included in the policy. According to the Insurance Information Institute, that usually includes a few basic coverage options. If your claim doesn’t fall under either your comprehensive or collision coverage, or if you don’t have those options on your policy, then you will have to pay out-of-pocket. Auto insurance will not cover:

  • General maintenance/wear and tear
  • A bad repair job
  • Intentional damage done by the owner
  • Personal belongings stolen from your car

What about full coverage auto insurance? Does full coverage car insurance cover repairs? The answer is still no. Full coverage is generally defined as the coverage required by state law (liability) as well as collision and comprehensive coverage. We discussed what those auto insurance coverage options pay for above. There is, however, coverage you can purchase called mechanical breakdown insurance that will pay for some repairs. Not all insurance companies offer it, so be sure to ask.

Which coverage does not cover the cost of the insured’s car repairs?

No auto insurance option will cover the cost of car repairs for general maintenance of a vehicle, a bad repair job, or intentional damages. However, the one coverage that never covers your car, regardless of the reason for the damage, is liability. Liability insurance pays for damage to others when you are at fault. Non-accident auto repairs that don’t fall under your comprehensive coverage will not be covered by your auto insurance provider.
