Living up north in the winter tundra, or even far north enough to enjoy a long, snowy winter, can inspire any outdoors adventurer to buy a snowmobile. But even if you have a lot of experience driving with them and in the snow, things can still get dangerous. That’s why you should protect yourself with a snowmobile insurance policy.

Snowmobile Insurance

Don’t make the mistake of relying on your home or auto insurance policy for your snowmobile coverage. In the unfortunate event that you need to make a claim, odds are that these policies will fall short of the coverage your snowmobile needs. You can get additional vehicle insurance to cover your snowmobile, though.

If you need to compare insurance quotes, use our FREE tool to start your search now.

Compare Comprehensive Coverage

You’re going to have to register your vehicle to comply with state law, and you’re going to have to obtain proof of insurance in order to do it. The good news is that snowmobile insurance policy can be as little as $10-15 a month for most sled owners, and that includes Comprehensive Coverage. Despite what the name implies, though, it’s only “comprehensive” in the sense that it protects you from loss, theft, or damage in the event that something other than a collision happens.

Collision Coverage – Features to Look For

If any damage was caused to your snowmobile as a result of collision or upset, affordable collision coverage will protect you against the loss. Collision Coverage also covers hit-and-run incidents. In addition, it also protects you in the event of:

  • Collision with stationary objects
  • Collision with other snowmobiles
  • Trailer damage

Trailers/Accessories Coverage

If you purchase both collision and comprehensive coverage, your trailer and accessories will be covered at no additional cost. These include snowmobile accessories (fuel containers, sleds, and fire extinguishers) which are used only with snowmobiles.

There are some limitations to snowmobile vehicle insurance, however. For starters, your snowmobile policy only insures that particular type of vehicle; it won’t cover your car, motorcycle, or any other property. Also, your snowmobile policy will only cover up to 5 drivers and 4 different snowmobiles.

How to Stay Safe on Your Snowmobile

Safe drivers often earn discounted rates on their snowmobile insurance policy. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind while you’re out enjoying your snowmobile:

  • Before you go, be sure your snowmobile is in perfect condition and take an emergency kit.
  • Always check the weather forecast before operating your snowmobile, especially if you plan to travel a long distance.
  • Make sure you know the age restrictions and all other local laws for safe snowmobile operation. For more information, perform an online search or contact your local natural resource agency.
  • Respect the wildlife, the land, and trails as you would your own property.
  • The mix of engine vibration and motion can temporarily dull your senses and fatigue your body. To avoid this, take regular rest breaks.
  • A helmet, warm reflective gloves, and clothing with a windproof outer layer are vital to your safety.
  • Make sure someone knows where you’re going and notify them once you arrive at your destination. If you become incapacitated, a rescue party will have a better idea of where to search for you.
  • Don’t operate a snowmobile while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Many accidents happen because of decreased reaction time and increased fatigue.
  • Visibility is reduced after dark, so the operation of a snowmobile at night requires special attention. Slow down. Don’t overdrive your headlights. And make sure you have good visibility to avoid potential collisions.
